Non-government groups and community-based organizations have a big voice and an advocacy role on behalf of under-privileged and under-served people. The challenge is how to give non-profit leaders and staff a bigger role in debate around the delivery of services to the poor. Sometimes a charismatic leader evolves from one of the groups, and at other times a senior manager leader steps up and takes on the role as community activists. There is a certain balancing act this “rebel” must play between its neighborhood constitutes, the wealthy donors and public officials that may be thousands of miles away. With our deep background as community fighters on behalf of HIV/AIDS patients to some of the most challenging human and civil rights issues of the past 50 years, Carrier is uniquely qualified in helping the voice of these advocacy roles.
